Or maybe you like to rev it up loud before the engine is warm. That would eventually bend a valve.Identify one that you can use to connect to the resistor. It must be a switched power supply, so it only has voltage when you turn the ignition key. You connect the resistor between the switched power supply and the cable you removed from the ignition switch in step 2. Solder the connections together and put heat shrink over them for protection.A couple things that'll wake up the 800 I've done are to debaffle the stock pipes, and Grampsized the air filter housing, see link below. Great tips on here. Proper jetting needs done along with these mods. The 18/40 spockets really change the way this bike accerates, makes the gears stretchout more. I've been having trouble getting the carburetor dialed in on my Vulcan 800. At this point, I'm not sure if my thoughts were correct, or if something else is causing the problem. It's a '99 VN800A with Cobra exhaust. I did the Russian Wolf EPA mod, and also drilled out the plug covering the air idle mixture screw.

Real backfiring can do some serious damage and is generally a timing issue, running way too rich, or both. It can also be caused by a bad seal on the exhaust flange or a poorly seated carb boot.
